Creating eye-catching covers and beautiful books with readable pages for over 25 years

Designing book covers is one of my favorite challenges as a graphic designer. I started working with authors and publishers in the early 1990s when Adobe software was new. Now, over 25 years later, computers may be more powerful and top-notch photos easier to find, but the principles of good design haven’t changed.

The publishing world has evolved too since my husband and I started PixyJack Press in 1997. Print-on-demand and ebooks have opened a world of possibilities, but good design and editing is critically important, now more than ever with the overwhelming plethora of average books published every year. Readers know professional quality when they see it. I would be glad to help you bring your project to fruition.

When starting a new project, we will first review your synopsis and book details, then discuss your goals and how you will be printing the book. I will give you book proposal, outlining the process, time frame and estimated costs.

Take a moment to review some of my cover designs above and below, and if you like what you see, fill out the short form at the bottom of this page. I will return your email as soon as possible.

Steve Todd“For 6 years I had the pleasure of working with LaVonne on the design, production and printing of the annual Cowboy Artist of America show catalogue. This included updating and refreshing biographies of artists and getting the best images available for a unique and compelling design. Her experience and commitment to excellence were the reason the catalogues became collector items.”

Mark FrenchI trusted LaVonne to help me make every important decision relating to the layout and cover art of my book. That was the best decision that I could have ever made. When we started work I was hoping that LaVonne’s artwork and layout would be up to the content of my book. It wasn’t long before I was hoping that the book’s content would be up to Lavonne’s superior artwork and layout!

“LaVonne did a miraculous job in elevating the quality of many rare and poor-quality photographs that are such important features of the book. She also cleverly manipulated an antique photograph so that it could be prominently incorporated on the book’s front cover. After working with LaVonne, I say, ‘Can’t wait to get started on the next one!’”

Mark French, President—Berthoud Historical Society

Sarah Donohoe“I had written my book but didn’t have the slightest inkling about how to get it published. LaVonne walked me through each step, offering professional advice while allowing me to drive the project. She knows every nuance of the publishing industry, has an eye for design, pays attention to detail, and is easy to work with. Without hesitation, I will hire LaVonne to design my next book.”

Kenneth Jessen“LaVonne Ewing has been doing book designs for J.V. Publications for many years. It started with new cover designs for books that dropped in sales to bring them back to become successful. She does not only great covers but interior designs for many of my titles, with several exceeding 600 pages. She will handle setting up on-demand printing, making my life worry free as a publisher. I give her a five out of five star rating!”
