Lloyd expands his 2011 Smart Guide to Geothermal by delving deeply into the nifty science behind ground-source heating. "Simple in concept, complex in practice," geothermal heat pump systems (GHPs) use the earth as both a heat source and heat sink. Heat is transferred from ground to building via an underground piping loop that uses soil temperature to warm or cool the refrigerant (or water) circulating within. Various kinds of ground-source systems (open loop, closed loop, direct exchange, etc.) and pipe layouts are discussed and illustrated. Although growing in popularity, GHPs are underutilized because, writes Lloyd, they are relatively unknown and misunderstood; his book should help on both counts. The author thoroughly crunches the numbers concerning the economics of system installation and its running. His experience with the technology sensibly and candidly discusses pros (e.g., clean, superefficiency), and cons (e.g., high up-front cost) are fairly weighed and explained. The book's handsome design and generous supplementary information (e.g., glossary, FAQs, lists) combine to aid comprehension. VERDICT Lloyd makes a complex subject accessible and helpful to a broad audience, from interested homeowners to system installers. A solid addition to all "renewables" collections.

DonLloyd-headshot72dpiRGBDon Lloyd is an electrical engineer now retired from Honeywell after 35 years in marketing, engineering and project management. He has extensive experience in taking complex subjects (such as laser gyroscopes or mosaic infrared detectors) and explaining how they work in terms understood by the general public. He is at his best when giving lectures describing how geothermal heat pumps work and why they are the ideal heating and cooling solution for homeowners. Prior to entering the geothermal world, he operated his own software consulting business as a Microsoft Certified Software Professional. He also served as an officer in the US Army. Don lives in the Hudson River Valley region of New York State with his wife, artist Martha Lloyd, in their new home where the oil trucks pass by but never stop. “Installing a geothermal heat pump was one of the best decisions I ever made!”
