Sylvia Dolson's passion for bears is equaled only by her quest to teach people about the true nature of these wonderful bruins. Her ultimate goal is for a greater coexistence—one in which people and bears live in harmony. As a naturalist, wildlife photographer and freelance writer, Sylvia chooses to spend much of her free time in the company of bears. Having walked among wild black bears, polar bears and grizzlies, she has gained an ever-increasing appreciation and understanding of the wilderness and its inhabitants.
Sylvia has been involved with the Get Bear Smart Society since 1996 and is now the executive director. She is also a member of the International Association for Bear Research and Management. As a leading expert on living with bears in residential communities, she has been instrumental in bringing forward more progressive, bear-friendly management policies in British Columbia, Canada. She currently co-chairs the Whistler Bear Working Group and was the key catalyst and contributor for Whistler's Black Bear Management Plan. Her persistent hard work and dedication have resulted in establishing Whistler as British Columbia's leading Bear Smart community, becoming a model for others to follow. Sylvia travels throughout North America speaking at conferences and workshops. She has authored many reference materials for educational purposes, maintains an extensive website, and writes a regular newspaper column.
Her books include Bear~ology: Fascinating Facts, Tales & Trivia; A Whistler Bear Story; and Joy of Bears. Sylvia and her husband, Steve, live in Whistler, British Columbia, where they share their lives with their canine companion, Kia.
